Creation of Honest Mama

Creation of Honest Mama

Today, we wanted to share a little back story about the creation of Honest Mama…

I (Jess) have always been a lover of greeting cards. Growing up, I remember going with my Dad to our local car wash. They had a good size store that we would hang out in while waiting for our car. I’m sure most kids would browse the endless candy aisles, but you could always find me browsing the rows of greeting cards. And this was the case no matter where I went with my parents…our local pharmacy, our shipping store, even the grocery store. My Dad always told me I should write cards.

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m one of those people that loves to keep cards! Confession: I have storage containers full of cards. And, no, they aren’t sitting in a garage or storage unit. They are under my bed and in my closet 🙂 And I even go back and read them from time to time.

I’m sure my love of greeting cards was passed down from my Grandpa. We always joke that he should buy stock in Hallmark, because he spends so much money on cards every year. No matter how insignificant the holiday, I can always count on a card from my Grandpa. Not to mention, it takes about 3 people just to sort and pass out cards at our family Christmas celebration.

About a year ago, I was browsing the card aisles at Target, searching for the perfect card for a mama friend of mine, and I couldn’t find anything appropriate. I went home and started researching what was out there, and there wasn’t much. I literally created a “Note” on my iPhone and started brainstorming ideas. I figured maybe I would open an Etsy store or something eventually, but I was pretty busy with my boys and my photography business at the time.

Before long, I had over 50 greeting card ideas for moms and was becoming more consumed with this idea. I have started businesses in the past, both on my own and with others. From the beginning, I knew I wanted this to be a collaboration of sorts. When thinking about the moms that I knew that would be perfect for something like this, Giselle was the first person that came to mind. I didn’t know her that well at the time; She is the sister of my midwife, and I had only met her a handful of times and done a photoshoot once with her family. I was a little nervous, but I reached out to her and she was so receptive and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

So, Honest Mama was born! And what started out as an idea for greeting cards for moms has grown into a passion to connect, encourage and inspire moms everywhere through humor, heart and, of course, honesty.

We hope you enjoy!
